Garcilaso de la Vega

(1503 - 1536) - Spaniard poet and soldier
Garcilaso de la Vega (1503-1536) was a Spaniard author. He is recognized by many among the greatest Hispanic writers of all times.

de la Vega was a follower of Emperor Carlos V of Spain. He identified himself with the Emperor's causes, bringing valuable help in defensive efforts in Vienna, Austria and being injured in battle at Tunisia.

Upon returning from battle, he earned the distrust of Emperor Carlos V, because his nephew had fallen in love with a woman whose status in society was higher than his own, and Emperor Carlos V refused to accept this. Garcilaso de la Vega defended his nephew's interest, and the Emperor felt betrayed. Because of this, Garcilaso de la Vega lost some terrains he owned.

In between defending his country, de la Vega had written many well known poems and books. His books and poems were favored by many members of Spain's high society, and published in many languages. Many of them perdure; they are read in high schools across Europe and Latin America.

Having regained the Emperor's trust, he went to war once again along with the Emperor, this time to Nice, France. While there, he was one of the first men to try to overtake a tower. He was hit by a stone on the head while trying this, and he sustained such a large injury that it caused him to die. Saddened by his friend's death, the Emperor had all the Frenchmen involved in his death stabbed.

Among his most famous literature works are "Hora de Nuestra Senora" and "Garcilaso sin Comento".

He was phosthumously given the title of "Prince of Castellan Poets".
